Mango Chutney Cheese Ball with Crispy Onions

Dec 4, 2025

When the holidays roll around, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle, planning, prepping, cooking for a crowd. But sometimes, the most memorable dishes are the ones that are simple, flavourful, and made with just a little intention. This Mango Chutney Cheese Ball is exactly that.

It’s one of the recipes I shared on CTV’s The Good Stuff with Mary Berg, and it’s become a personal go-to during the festive season. The warm spices of garam masala, creamy cheeses, sweet mango chutney, and crispy onion coating hit every texture and flavour note, without taking up your whole afternoon. It’s a little unexpected, deeply comforting, and guaranteed to disappear fast at any gathering.

Whether you’re hosting a full-blown holiday party or just putting together a small snack spread, this recipe makes entertaining feel easy and elevated.

Why You’ll Love This Cheese Ball

  • Big flavour with minimal ingredients
  • Make-ahead friendly (perfect for holiday prep)
  • Indian-inspired twist on a retro classic
  • That crispy onion crust? Irresistible

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • 4 tablespoons butter, divided
  • 1 tablespoon garam masala
  • 250g cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1 cup grated cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup mango chutney
  • 1 cup crispy onions (store-bought)

How to Make It

  1. Set a small saucepan over medium heat. Add 2 tablespoons of butter. Once melted, stir in the garam masala and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Transfer to a mixing bowl and let cool for 10 minutes.
  2. Add the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter to the bowl along with the cream cheese, cheddar cheese, and mango chutney. Mix until fully combined.
  3. Refrigerate for about 15 minutes to help the mixture firm up.
  4. Shape the mixture into a ball.
  5. Scatter the crispy onions into a pie plate. Roll the cheese ball in the onions, pressing gently to coat all sides.
  6. Wrap in plastic wrap and chill for at least 1 hour, or up to 48 hours, before serving.

Tips & Serving Ideas

  • Serve with crostini, naan chips, or seeded crackers.
  • Add a pinch of chili flakes if you want a spicier finish.
  • If your chutney is chunky, give it a quick chop before mixing.

Hosting Tip

Prep this cheese ball the day before your event and let the flavours meld overnight. It saves you time and makes the cheese ball even more delicious the next day.
