Day 4: English Jacket Potatoes

by

Nothing beats a crispy-skinned, fluffy-centered English Jacket Potato! Baked directly on the oven rack for the ultimate crunch, these simple yet satisfying potatoes are a British classic. Customize them with butter, cheese, sour cream, bacon bits, or green onions for a delicious meal or side dish.

Ingredients

Serves: 4

  • 4 medium Russet potatoes
  • Olive oil
  • Salt

Optional Toppings:

  • Butter
  • Sour cream
  • Grated cheddar cheese
  • Sliced green onions
  • Bacon bits

How to Make English Jacket Potatoes

  1. Preheat the Oven:
    • Arrange the oven rack in the middle position.
    • Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Prep the Potatoes:
    • Scrub the Russet potatoes clean and pat dry.
    • Brush the skins with olive oil and season generously with salt.
  3. Bake the Potatoes:
    • Place the potatoes directly on the oven rack (no foil needed—this keeps the skin crispy!).
    • Bake for 2 hours until the skins are golden, crisp, and the insides are fluffy.
  4. Fluff & Serve:
    • Remove from the oven and let cool slightly.
    • Cut a cross pattern on the top of each potato and squeeze gently to open it up.
    • Fluff the interior with a fork, add butter, and season with salt.
    • Top with your favorite toppings and enjoy immediately!

Tips & Variations

  • Why Russet potatoes? They have a high starch content, making them light and fluffy inside with a crispy skin.
  • No microwave shortcuts! Jacket potatoes get their signature texture from long baking—don’t rush the process.
  • Want extra crispy skin? Use coarse sea salt and bake at 425°F for 1.5 hours instead.
  • Customize your toppings: Try chili, baked beans, coleslaw, tuna mayo, or even curry for a hearty meal.

FAQ

Can I make Jacket Potatoes ahead of time?
Yes! Bake them and store in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven at 375°F for 20 minutes to restore crispiness.

Why bake directly on the oven rack?
This allows air to circulate, ensuring a crispy skin—baking on a sheet tray makes them softer.

Can I cook these in an air fryer?
Yes! Bake at 400°F for 45-50 minutes, flipping halfway through.
